Apple Notes alternative: when Modopodo is worth it (and when it isn't)
In short
Apple Notes is the better pick if you want a free, built-in notes app for lists, scans and quick jottings across Apple devices. Modopodo is the better pick if you capture lots of loose thoughts by voice and want them titled, filed by theme and reflected back to you without doing any organizing yourself.
Apple Notes is already on your iPhone, it's free, and it's very good at what it does. So the honest question isn't "which app is better?" but "what would you get from switching, or from adding a second app?" This page compares the two plainly, including the parts where Apple Notes wins.
What's the difference between Apple Notes and Modopodo?
Apple Notes is a general notes app: you create notes, put them in folders, add tags, checklists, sketches, scans and attachments, and it syncs through iCloud. You decide where everything goes. Modopodo is an AI second brain: you speak or type whatever is on your mind into one field, and it gives each note a title, summary, kind (idea, feeling, plan, question and so on), a theme and tags, then connects it to related notes. You never pick a folder.
The bigger difference shows up later. Modopodo can read your notes back to you: on request it returns reflections with patterns, blind spots and tensions in your thinking, threads recurring thoughts into growing idea pages, and lets you ask questions about your own notes with citations. Apple Notes is built for storing and finding notes, not for thinking about them.

Is Apple Notes good enough as a second brain?
For many people, yes. If you're disciplined about filing, Apple Notes with folders, tags and smart folders can hold everything. The catch is that the system only works as well as the time you spend maintaining it. Most of us capture quickly and file never, so after a year the notes app becomes a long, unsorted list. If that sounds familiar, the problem isn't storage; it's organization. That's the gap Modopodo fills. (More on this in what is a second brain.)
Does Apple Notes transcribe voice notes?
Yes. According to Apple, Notes can record audio and transcribe it on iPhone 12 and later when the device language is one of ten supported languages, and you can search the transcript or add it to the note. On Apple Intelligence-capable iPhones it can also summarize a recording. Modopodo goes a step further for thinking out loud: words appear as you speak, it handles many languages (including switching languages within one note), and the transcript becomes a fully organized note rather than an audio attachment. See voice notes app for how that works.
Choose Apple Notes if…
- You want a free notes app that's already on your iPhone, iPad and Mac.
- Your notes are mostly lists, recipes, scanned documents, sketches or attachments.
- You share notes or folders with family or coworkers.
- You enjoy organizing with folders and tags and keep it up.
- You need access from a Windows PC browser via iCloud.com.
Choose Modopodo if…
- You capture lots of loose thoughts, ideas and feelings and never file them.
- You prefer speaking to typing and want clean, organized notes from it.
- You want to see patterns, recurring themes and blind spots in your own thinking.
- You want to ask questions like "what have I been saying about my job?" and get an answer with sources.
- You're fine paying for a focused tool after a 30-day free trial.
Can I use Apple Notes and Modopodo together?
Yes, and many people will. A natural split: Apple Notes for practical, reference-style notes (packing lists, Wi-Fi passwords, scanned receipts) and Modopodo for the thinking: ideas, reflections, brain dumps and decisions. Modopodo doesn't do checklists, sketches or document scans, and it doesn't try to.
How private is Modopodo compared with Apple Notes?
Both keep your notes tied to your account and neither shows ads. Modopodo stores notes in the EU (Frankfurt), isolated per account at the database level. Because it uses AI, note text is processed by Anthropic (Claude) and voice by OpenAI for transcription; under their API terms this data isn't used to train their models, and audio isn't kept on Modopodo's servers. There are no tracking or analytics SDKs. If you'd rather no third party ever processes your notes, Apple Notes is the simpler choice. Details: private AI journal.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Apple Notes?
It depends on what's missing. For team wikis and databases, Notion; for local Markdown files and plugins, Obsidian; for an AI that organizes and reflects on your thoughts, Modopodo. If Apple Notes works for you, there's no need to switch.
Is Modopodo free like Apple Notes?
No. Modopodo has a 30-day free trial with full access, then costs $6.99 per month or $49.99 per year (prices may vary by country). Apple Notes is free with your Apple devices.
Can I import my Apple Notes into Modopodo?
Modopodo doesn't offer an Apple Notes import. It's designed for new thoughts captured as you go, and works well alongside Apple Notes rather than as a place to migrate an archive.
Does Modopodo work on Mac or Android?
Modopodo is an iPhone app (iOS 15 or later) with a web app for subscribers that you can open in any browser, including on a Mac. There is no Android app yet.
Does Apple Notes use AI?
On supported iPhones, Apple Intelligence can summarize audio recordings in Notes and offers writing tools. It does not automatically file your notes by theme or reflect patterns across them.
Can I get my notes out of Modopodo?
Yes. You can export all your notes as Markdown at any time, and you can delete your account and all your data whenever you like.
