Reflect notes alternative: Modopodo vs Reflect (and Reflect Open)
In short
Reflect rebuilt itself in 2026 as Reflect Open: a free, open-source Mac app that stores notes as local Markdown files with daily notes and backlinks, plus a paid iPhone app and bring-your-own-key AI. Modopodo is a hosted, voice-first second brain that organizes notes for you. Choose Reflect to own files and link manually; Modopodo for hands-off organization.
What changed at Reflect in 2026?
On July 14, 2026, Reflect announced Reflect Open, “a local-first, open-source app built on plain Markdown files.” The team says the original Reflect remains available and maintained, with no deadline to move, and that existing subscriptions transfer to Reflect Open. Reflect Open keeps the parts people liked: daily notes, backlinks, fast search and a minimal, keyboard-first editor.
The model is different now. Reflect Open has no account and no Reflect-hosted cloud. Notes live in a folder you choose and sync through iCloud or a GitHub repository you own. AI features (transcribing voice notes, answering questions with links to source notes, extracting takeaways) use your own OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or OpenRouter key, billed by that provider. You can mark notes private so they are never sent to AI.

Where Reflect is stronger
- You own the files. Every note is a plain Markdown file in a folder you choose, readable by any editor or AI agent.
- Open source. Anyone can inspect the code, and the app is not tied to one company’s servers.
- Writing on a Mac. A free, keyboard-first Mac app with daily notes and backlinks, which Modopodo does not offer.
- Choice of AI provider. You pick the model and pay the provider directly, and can keep private notes out of AI entirely.
- iPad support. Modopodo is iPhone-only on mobile.
Where Modopodo is different
Reflect asks you to build the structure: write in today’s note, add backlinks, decide what connects to what. Modopodo is for people who never got round to that. You speak or type a thought, and it gets a title, summary, kind, theme, tags and the people and places it mentions. Related notes appear on every note, and you can search by meaning, not just exact words.
- Voice-first capture with live transcription as you speak, in many languages.
- Reflections that point out patterns, blind spots, tensions and questions across your notes.
- Growing ideas that thread a recurring thought into one page showing how it evolved.
- No setup: no API keys, no folders, no sync settings.
Is Reflect or Modopodo more private?
They are private in different ways. Reflect Open keeps notes on your devices and in iCloud or Git, and says it “does not add its own end-to-end encryption layer”; AI requests go straight to the provider whose key you use. Modopodo stores notes on EU servers in Frankfurt, isolated per account, and sends text to Anthropic and audio to OpenAI for processing under API terms that exclude training. It has no ads or tracking SDKs and lets you export or delete everything. If you want no third-party server at all, Reflect Open (with AI off) is the stricter option. Choose Reflect if…
- You like linking notes yourself and working from daily notes.
- You want plain Markdown files on your own disk, or open-source software.
- You write mostly on a Mac or iPad.
- You already have an AI API key and prefer to choose the model.
Choose Modopodo if…
- You think out loud and want voice notes turned into organized text.
- You do not want to maintain links, tags or folders.
- You want the app to reflect your thinking back to you, not just store it.
- You want AI included in one price without managing keys.

Frequently asked questions
Is Reflect shutting down?
No. In July 2026 Reflect launched Reflect Open, an open-source rewrite, and said the existing Reflect app stays available and maintained with no deadline to switch. Existing subscriptions transfer to Reflect Open.
Is Reflect free?
The Reflect Open Mac app is free and open source. On iPhone and iPad, the App Store lists Reflect Pro at $9.99/month or $99/year (US, as of October 2026). AI use is billed separately by the provider whose key you add.
What is the difference between Reflect and Obsidian?
Both now store notes as local Markdown files. Obsidian is a broad, plugin-driven tool across desktop and mobile; Reflect is a narrower, minimal app centered on daily notes and backlinks for Apple devices.
Does Modopodo have backlinks?
Not in the manual sense. Modopodo connects notes automatically: every note shows related notes, and notes are grouped by theme and by the people and projects they mention.
Can I use Modopodo on a Mac?
Yes, through the web app in your browser, which subscribers can use alongside the iPhone app. There is no native Mac app.
