A voice notes app that transcribes live and files every note for you
In short
Modopodo is a voice notes app for iPhone that transcribes you live: your words appear on screen while you talk. When you stop, it gives the note a title, a short summary, a kind and a theme, and links it to related notes, so a spoken thought becomes something you can find and build on later.
Most thoughts show up at bad moments: on a walk, in the car, while you cook. Typing them out is slow, and a raw audio memo is something you will rarely listen to again. A good voice notes app should do two jobs: turn speech into text you can read at a glance, and put that text somewhere you will actually find it. Modopodo does both.
What makes a good voice notes app?
A good voice notes app gets out of your way while you talk and does the tidying afterwards. That means fast capture, accurate speech to text, and notes that end up organized without you sorting them.
- Live transcription. You see your words as you speak, so you know it is working and can keep going.
- Language freedom. Modopodo handles many languages, and you can switch languages within one note.
- Text you can scan. A title and a one-line summary on every note, instead of a list of files called “New Recording 14”.
- Automatic filing. Each note gets a kind, a theme and tags, plus the people, places and projects it mentions.
- Search that understands you. Find a note later by what it was about, not only by the exact words you used.
How do voice notes work in Modopodo?
You tap record, talk, and tap stop. Modopodo transcribes as you go, then organizes the finished note in the background.
- Tap record and talk
Speak the way you would to a friend. Half sentences, tangents and “um” are fine.
- Watch the words appear
Live transcription shows your speech as text while you talk, so you can glance at it mid-thought.
- Stop when you are done
The note is saved right away. There is nothing to name and no folder to pick.
- Modopodo files it
It adds a title, a short summary, a kind (idea, plan, question, feeling and so on), a theme, tags, and any people, places or projects you mentioned.
- Find it later
Browse by theme, by person or as a timeline, or search by meaning. Related notes appear on every note.
What does a transcribed voice note look like?
Here is a real-world style example. You say, while walking home: “I keep thinking we should move the team offsite to spring. Anna mentioned the budget resets in March, and the weather in Lisbon would be better anyway. Need to check with Tom before Friday.”
| Field | Example result |
|---|---|
| Title | Moving the team offsite to spring |
| Summary | Spring offsite fits the March budget reset; confirm with Tom by Friday. |
| Kind | Plan |
| Theme | Work |
| People | Anna, Tom |
| Places | Lisbon |
The exact wording will differ, and you can change any of it. If you move a note to a different theme or kind, Modopodo learns from that and files similar notes the same way next time. More on that in how the AI note organizer works.

Voice notes app vs voice memo transcription app vs dictation
These three tools overlap, but they solve different problems. Pick based on what you want to happen after you stop talking.
| Tool type | Best for | What you end up with |
|---|---|---|
| Dictation (keyboard mic) | Typing a message hands-free | Text inside whatever app you were in |
| Voice memo transcription app | Recording meetings or lectures | A long recording and a transcript |
| Voice notes app like Modopodo | Capturing your own thoughts | Short, titled notes filed by theme and linked together |
If you mainly record meetings with other people, a dedicated meeting recorder is the better fit. Modopodo is built for personal thinking: ideas, plans, worries, things you learned. Our voice journaling guide covers how to make a habit of it.
Can I use it hands-free on the go?
Recording takes one tap and you do not need to look at the screen while you talk. There is no hands-free trigger yet (no Siri, Shortcuts or widget capture), so you open the app and tap the mic. For ideas that hit while walking or commuting, see capturing ideas on the go. Please only use your phone in the car when it is safe and legal to do so.
What happens to my audio?
Your speech is transcribed by OpenAI and the text is stored as your note. Audio is not kept on Modopodo’s servers, and under OpenAI’s API terms the data is not used to train their models. Notes are stored in the EU. Details are on the private AI journal page.
Can I still type?
Yes. Text capture is one field that saves instantly, works offline and syncs later. Voice notes recorded without a connection are kept and transcribed once you are back online. Typed and spoken notes are organized the same way and live side by side.
Tips for better voice notes
- One thought per note. Short notes get cleaner titles and land in the right theme more often.
- Say names clearly. Names and places are the words transcription most often gets wrong.
- Think out loud, do not draft. The point is to get the thought out; Modopodo writes the title and summary.
- Add later instead of searching first. If an old thought comes back, just record it again. Related notes link up on their own.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best voice notes app for iPhone?
It depends on what you record. For meetings, a meeting recorder with speaker labels works best. For your own thoughts and ideas, Modopodo transcribes you live and then titles, tags and files each note by theme so you can find it later.
Can I turn voice memos into text on iPhone?
Yes. In Modopodo you record directly in the app and the speech is turned into text while you talk. It does not import existing audio files from the Voice Memos app, so it works best as the place where you capture new thoughts.
Does Modopodo work in languages other than English?
Yes. Live transcription supports many languages, and you can switch languages within the same note. The organization (titles, summaries, themes) works on notes in those languages too.
Does the voice notes app keep my recordings?
No. Audio is not kept on Modopodo’s servers. Your speech is transcribed and the resulting text is saved as your note, stored in the EU.
Can I edit a transcribed note?
Yes. You can fix words, change the title, or move the note to a different kind or theme. Corrections to kind and theme also teach Modopodo how to file similar notes in the future.
How much does Modopodo cost?
Every plan starts with a 30-day free trial with full access. After that it costs $6.99 per month or $49.99 per year, and prices may vary by country. You can cancel anytime.
