Chat with your notes: ask questions, get answers with sources

Updated · 3 min read

In short

In Modopodo you can chat with your notes: ask a question like “what have I said about changing jobs?” and get an answer drawn from your own notes, with citations that link to each note it used. You can check every claim against what you actually wrote, which makes it a memory you can question.

After a few months of notes, the useful questions change. Not “where is that note?” but “what do I actually think about this?” or “when did this start bothering me?” Answering those by hand means rereading dozens of notes. Asking your notes does the reading for you.

What does it mean to chat with your notes?

You type a question in plain language and Modopodo answers using only your notes as the source, citing the notes it relied on. Each citation links to the original note so you can read it in context.

What kinds of questions can I ask about my notes?

Questions about your own thinking, plans and history work best. A few examples:

You askWhat the answer draws on
What have I decided about the apartment move so far?Plans, questions and feelings filed under your Home theme
What did Anna suggest about my presentation?Notes that mention Anna
Which side-project ideas have I mentioned more than once?Ideas across themes and months
What did I learn from the Lisbon trip?Memories and learnings that mention Lisbon
What keeps coming up when I write about sleep?Notes in Health and any related reflections

How does an AI that answers from my notes work?

  1. Ask in your own words

No special syntax. Ask as you would ask a friend who read your notes.

  2. Modopodo finds the relevant notes

It uses meaning-based search, the same idea as searching notes by meaning, to pull the notes that matter.

  3. It writes an answer

Claude, by Anthropic, composes the answer from those notes.

  4. You check the sources

Citations link to each note it used, so you can confirm or correct.

Why citations matter

Any AI answer can be wrong or incomplete. Citations make that visible: if the answer says you decided something, you can tap through and see whether you did. If the answer leans on one old note, you will notice. This is the main difference from pasting notes into a general chatbot and hoping.

Talk to your notes vs NotebookLM or ChatGPT

Tools like NotebookLM answer from documents you upload, and ChatGPT answers from whatever you paste in. Both are good at that job. Modopodo is different in where the notes come from: you capture them there every day, by voice or text, already organized by theme, kind and person, so there is nothing to upload and the source is always current.

Is it private to ask questions about my notes?

Your notes are stored in the EU and isolated per account at the database level. Questions and answers are processed by Anthropic’s Claude, and under its API terms the data is not used to train models. There is no advertising or tracking. More on the private AI journal page.

How to ask your notes better questions

  • Be specific about the topic: “the apartment move” beats “my plans”.
  • Add a time frame if it matters: “since the summer”, “this month”.
  • Ask about change: “How has my view on freelancing shifted?” draws on notes written months apart.
  • Ask for what is missing: “What questions about the move have I not answered yet?”

Example: asking your notes before a decision

Say you are deciding whether to take a job offer. You ask: “What have I said about wanting more responsibility at work?” The answer might pull together a note from spring where you felt bored, a plan to ask for a team lead role, and a recent feeling of being stretched thin, each linked. Seeing them side by side is often more useful than any single note.

From there you can open one of the cited notes and dissect it to test the reasoning.

What makes answers from your own notes useful?

Your notes hold context no general AI has: the people in your life, the projects you care about, what you said last spring. An answer built from that context is personal in a way generic advice cannot be. Because Modopodo already files each note by theme, kind and person, questions like “what did Tom and I agree on?” have a clean set of notes to draw from.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ask AI questions about my own notes?

Yes. In Modopodo you ask a question in plain language and get an answer drawn from your notes, with citations linking to each note it used.

Does the AI make things up when answering from my notes?

AI answers can be wrong or incomplete. Modopodo shows citations to the notes behind each answer, so you can check the claim against what you actually wrote.

How is this different from NotebookLM?

NotebookLM answers from sources you upload. Modopodo is where you capture your thoughts in the first place, by voice or text, and it answers from that growing collection without any uploading.

Can I chat with my notes on the web?

Yes. The web app at podomodo.com/modopodo/app, included with the subscription, has Ask as well as capture, search and reflections. Sign in with the same Apple or Google account as on iPhone. There is no Android app yet.

Can I ask questions about PDFs or documents?

No. Modopodo does not import PDFs, images or handwriting. It answers from the notes you capture in the app.
