A private AI journal app: what happens to your notes, plainly

Updated · 4 min read

In short

Modopodo is a private AI journal app built in the EU. Notes are stored in Frankfurt and isolated per account. AI processing by Anthropic and OpenAI runs under API terms that do not use your data for training. Audio is not kept, there are no ads or tracking SDKs, and you can export or delete everything anytime.

A journal holds the things you would not say out loud. Before you hand it to an app with AI, you should know where the words go, who processes them and what you can take back. This page answers that plainly, including the trade-offs.

Is an AI journal app private?

It depends on where notes are stored, who processes them and on what terms. Modopodo stores notes in the EU, uses AI providers under terms that exclude training on your data, and has no advertising or tracking.

Where your data goes in Modopodo

Advertising and analyticsNoneNo ad, tracking or analytics SDKs; data is never sold

Will my journal be used to train AI?

No. Modopodo uses Anthropic and OpenAI through their business APIs. Anthropic’s commercial terms state it may not train models on customer content from its services, and OpenAI states on its enterprise privacy page that API data is not used for training by default.

Is Modopodo an encrypted notes app?

Honest answer: your data is encrypted in transit, but Modopodo is not a zero-knowledge, end-to-end encrypted journal. For the AI to title, organize and reflect on your notes, the text has to be readable by the service that processes it. If you need a journal nobody but you can ever read, a local-only or end-to-end encrypted app without cloud AI is the better choice.

What Modopodo does instead: encryption in transit, EU storage, per-account isolation at the database level, no third-party trackers, providers that do not train on your data, and full control to export or delete. The maker does not read your notes, except to investigate a problem you report or where the law requires it.

What GDPR rights do I have?

Under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, you can access, correct, export and delete your data. In Modopodo that is practical, not just policy:

  1. Access and export

Export all your notes as Markdown, a plain-text format any notes app can open.

  2. Correct

Edit any note, and change its kind, theme or tags.

  3. Delete

Delete your account and all data anytime, right in the app under Settings.

Is it safe to journal with ChatGPT instead?

Consumer chatbots have their own settings and retention rules, which differ from the API terms Modopodo uses, so check them before pasting a journal in. Our guide is AI journaling safe? compares the options and what to look for.

What makes a secure journaling app?

  • Clear data location and who the processors are.
  • No training on your entries by the AI provider.
  • No ad or tracking SDKs, since those share usage data with third parties.
  • Easy export in an open format, so you are never locked in.
  • Real deletion of your account and data.

Modopodo meets these. It does not offer end-to-end encryption, for the reason above. Choose based on which matters more to you: AI help with your thinking, or zero-knowledge storage.

Questions to ask any AI journal app about privacy

Whatever app you choose, these questions get to the point quickly. Here are Modopodo’s answers:

QuestionModopodo
Where are entries stored?EU (Frankfurt)
Which AI companies process them?Anthropic (Claude) and OpenAI (transcription)
Are entries used to train AI?No, under their API terms
Are audio recordings kept?No
Any ads or trackers? No ad, tracking or analytics SDKs
Is data sold?Never
Can I export everything?Yes, as Markdown
Can I delete everything?Yes, anytime
Encrypted? In transit, yes; not end-to-end (the AI needs to read notes)
Does the maker read my notes? No, except to investigate a problem you report or where the law requires it

What Modopodo does not do with your notes

  • It does not show you ads or build an advertising profile.
  • It does not include third-party tracking or analytics SDKs.
  • It does not sell your data.
  • It does not keep your voice recordings.
  • It does not share notebooks with anyone, because there are no shared notebooks.

If you journal about the hard parts of life, it is reasonable to want fewer moving parts. Modopodo keeps the list short: one storage location, two AI processors with clear terms, and nothing else.

Private AI journal app vs offline journal

An offline journal keeps everything on your device, which is as private as it gets, but it cannot read across months of entries and reflect patterns back to you, connect notes or answer questions. A private AI journal app trades some of that isolation for those abilities, with clear limits on where data goes. Neither is wrong; it comes down to what you want from journaling.

Frequently asked questions

Is Modopodo safe for private journaling?

It is built for it, within clear limits. Modopodo stores notes in the EU, encrypts data in transit, uses Anthropic and OpenAI under API terms that exclude training on your data, and has no ads or tracking. It is not end-to-end encrypted. For the wider question, see is AI journaling safe?.

Where are my Modopodo notes stored?

In the EU, on Supabase in Frankfurt. Each account’s notes are isolated at the database level.

Is Modopodo end-to-end encrypted?

No. Data is encrypted in transit, but the AI needs to read your notes to organize them and generate reflections, so it is not a zero-knowledge app. If end-to-end encryption is a must for you, choose a local-only journal without cloud AI.

Does Modopodo keep my voice recordings?

No. Audio is sent for transcription and the text is saved as your note; the audio is not kept on Modopodo’s servers.

Can I delete all my data?

Yes. You can delete your account and all data anytime, right in the app under Settings; it permanently removes your account and notes from Modopodo’s servers. You can export every note as Markdown first.

Does Modopodo sell my data or show ads?

No. There is no advertising, no tracking or analytics SDKs, and data is never sold. The app is paid for by subscriptions.
